Interview with a Visionary….
by Jennifer Hillman

Conversation with Daah Oliveira, photographer and more

I first saw Daah Oliveira on a Facebook Street Photography Group. It caught my eye and the story of the image unfolded. I shared the inspired words and then saw other images. Inspiring me again and again.

It is great to have an image that the story unfolds before you. That truly captures the moment and a life in black and white.
I chatted with Daah Oliveira over FB chat on a Sunday morning/afternoon.

~jh: Okay… now is there any links of other sites that help you out perhaps flickr.com… any blogs you like reading. Where do you get your inspirations?

~do: I really enjoy doing blur/motion pictures and one of the photographers who really inspires me is this one. ALEXEY TITARENKO | PHOTOGRAPHY. there are quite few other photographers but I enjoy more his style and specially because he shoots with a Yashica

~jh: you have a wonderful eye for poetry through your lens.

~do: I read loads of blogs about photography but I don’t have any specific which I read every day, it depends a lot of the context and when I’m doing research for any further projects I write down the photographers that I would like to keep following their works

~jh: i will be looking at your other images too.. so don’t be surprise to hear from me…. you are the feature artist this month. congratulation!

~do: thank you Jennifer I feel very honoured! I’m working in a new project, totally different of street haha but still with my style.

~jh: as you love photography. So how long have you been shooting… what are your first memories of shooting? what inspires you?

~do: about 6 years… I was in a concert of a really good friend of mine and I took this pic.

I had just finished high school and I wasn’t sure of what to study next. I used to take random pics just to myself but after this pic I decided to study photography so I did.

~jh: what inspires you?

~do: music! Literature… and movies. I love cinematography

~jh: what, if you can describe, do you look for when on the streets?

~do: I look for clean backgrounds and one or two people passing by! I don’t actually like too many people on the picture. I always look for people with dark clothes or interesting styles! but the spot is definitely the first thing that I look for

~jh: Do you shoot daily?

~do: I used to! But I just finished my first year at uni so I had loads of assessments to conclude and because of that I had to take a break. But from tomorrow I will be back in the streets hehe

~jh: what university? and photography your major?

~do: I graduated in photography in 2009 but at that time I was living in Brazil so I did my studies there. now I’m studying broadcasting and media which is related with cinematography as well… but to be honest I’m only studying this because sometimes is good to have a backup in case of photography don’t provide me any profits, if you know what I mean…nowadays the market is very competitive so

~~jh: indeed… that is why I dabble. I got some skills in many fields. Dabbling meaning I study and work in the field until I feel comfortable to work in the field.

~do: yeah! I believe that is always good to be able to work in all the areas

~jh: To me, they are all related. If you have a good knowledge of composition… it helps in everything you do.

~do: yeah! I totally agree with you

~jh: you can use that in all fields of art and business. what advice to you have for artists?

~do: exactly. haha that’s a good question! But I think that my answer is related with what we were talking now…

I would say to them to don’t get accommodated and try new things and new discovers every day! Not needing to change their personal style but accepting the idea that when it comes about ART, they must to try a bit of different areas!

Habit, routine…
She went to the store each morning
the store employees all know her by name.
One apple, a quart of cream
perhaps a sweet treat once and awhile.
She walks back to her apartment
Alone…
her husband died many years ago
her heart still beats for him…
and only him.
Habit, routine…
It’s all the samne
